We're still here. Still mommying.
Miss K is phenomenal. Growing everyday. Blogging is hard when you love your job, your family, your life. Ha- that sounds funny. It should be easy because I have so much to blog about. I mean it's hard because I am so busy enjoying life, I forget to blog. Kudos to the moms that can do it all.
I'll leave you with a picture of my princess. Almost 18-months-old already!

To a year we'll never forget
It's hard to believe we are already starting a new year. It seems like yesterday I was finding out I was pregnant and now Little Miss will be 9 months old in 2 weeks!
2012 was a year full of fun, challenges, happy and sad times. I guess that's really any year but this one was special for so many reasons.
2012 started with a very sweet surprise shower from some of my favorite students.
My Mizzou Spirit students are some of the best kiddos you'll ever meet. They helped Little Miss arrive in style.
It was time for my hands down AMAZING Wizard of Oz themed baby shower thrown by our awesome families and friends.

After that shower it was time to get serious about the nursery, we only had another few weeks after all. I LOVE it still!

Wow- to look back at pictures just makes me smile. As I said, we were very blessed this year, it was amazing. But 2012 also brought some sad times as well including the one year anniversary since Grandpa Gary passed away and the scary news of Nana Vicki's breast cancer.
BUT- looking back on the last 12 months, I don't think I could change much. We have a happy, healthy, beautiful baby girl. Our family is complete. I don't know what 2013 will hold but I can only hope it's as magical as 2012!
It's a good thing too because on April 17 (10 days before she was due) Miss Kennedy August Karr graced us with her presence.

I never knew you could fall in love so fast.
We've had so much fun since!

Small room, big ideas
I realized I've never posted pictures of Miss K's room and I was so happy with what we were able to do with such a tiny space.
Trying to decide how to decorate my child's room was about as hard as naming her. I felt like it was going to define her personality even though she wasn't born yet. I wanted something classic yet fun. I didn't want anything pale and "relaxing". I wanted to be able to walk in and say "yep, it's a girl" yet I wasn't a fan of a ton of pink. But I wanted some pink. Super picky I know. That's why I don't suggest you wait until you are 6 months pregnant to start on your first child's nursery.
I finally decided on black and white with a"touch" of pink. But not baby pink- raspberry pink. Try explaining that to your husband. Once we agreed (aka I wore him down) it was time to go.
Let's just start with this- the nursery was our junk room and it was full of a little bit of everything, old high school yearbooks, suit jackets, video games, ALL of my shoes and more. The room is tiny, and kind of a hexagon shape. The previous owners used it as a study- there were at least 40 pictures and things hung on the wall and after they were taken off you could tell they smoked a pipe or something in there because the walls were yellow. There was also a 1970's boxy border around the top and all the baseboards and door were that ugly brown color. The previous owners showed no love to that room. Every other door and baseboards were painted white at some time so yeah- we had some major work to do.
More of our junk- two lamps that we weren't using anywhere, an old football helmet and pompoms, a broken tv and more Harry Potter and Twilight books than I'd like to admit (who am I kidding, I kept all those).
On to the bedding. We got the crib and changing table for a steal- beautiful black wood. I needed something that would pop. My mom has a gift. She is an artist and her brush is a sewing machine. She can make anything and once again I got a Vicki original with my bedding. For a mere $40 we turned this:

into this:
4 different fabrics makes a beautiful bed skirt and reversible bumpers. All you have to do is untie them and turn them around. It makes for many different ways to spice up the crib. Even though she doesn't have the bumpers on yet I absolutely love how they turned out. I love the whimsical patterns and I love that they don't match but more so coexist.
All that was left was a touch of "me" here and there. Since the room is small the crib fit snug in the indented wall, the changing table took up one wall, the windows took up the big wall and the closet was on the other bigger wall we had very limited space for anything else. I took a vertical shelf and simply turned it on its side to make it a long, short shelf that fits perfectly under the window. I bought pink contaniers to add some pop of color on that side of the room.
I wanted something for her to look at while she was in her crib but I didn't want a traditional mobile so I bought these beauties for about $4 each online.
And I wanted some awesome pictures of her to fill up the giant pink wall so I waited until we got our amazing newborn pictures back from the wonderful eveeimages.com and hung them a bit off center right above her crib.
Just a few more tiny touches here and there:
And it's funny. Even though she wasn't born and we had no idea- her room does describe Little Miss. She's quirky and fun. She is bright and happy. But she's also classic, she's one of a kind. The room fits her perfectly.

So needless to say this room needed some TLC. I take after my mother so I don't do anything easy and quick. We started cleaning the room out around Christmas. That took about a month. At this point it's late January and Kennedy is coming in April and I know"me" and I'm freaking out. We will never get it done I thought. Then one night after working a late event I came home to my husband sleeping on the couch and the light on in that room. I almost cried. My mom, his mom, brother, sister and himself cleaned the last of the junk out, and took off all the crappy border. They even bought some blinds and washed the walls. I don't even want to know how long it took them, but it looked- well- a little better.
Now it was time to paint. Geoff went out of town one weekend and let's be honest- we all know we get more work done when our husbands are gone so my mom and I jumped at the chance to paint. I went to the store with a very set mind. White walls, black trim. The pink accents would be in the bedding, rug and other things.
Wrong again- once we were at the store and I was looking at colors my mind started racing. With the help (ahem) from my mother, I walked out of the store with three colors. This is the picture I sent my husband:
Ok so the room needed some color. The one 3 part wall was just going to look too small so we ended up painting it a deep pink. I was scared to death my husband would hate it but he seemed ok. He was also 3 hours away and knew he would never make it back in time to stop me.
After three days of painting we finally got white walls and a pink backdrop for the crib. It was coming together. It somehow still took us another month and a half to paint all the baseboards black. That took some time and patience, something I didn't really have anymore come March, yes, March. I really know how to prolong things.

and voila!
A room fit for my little princess.
So it only took 5 months from start to finish, believe my when I say we hung the last shelf 12 hours before my water broke.
I really like the way it turned out. It is a long way from what it was and I think we did the most with the tiny space we had. Do I wish it was bigger? Of course. But we made it work. I should also mention though I don't have a picture, we took the closet door off and my talented mother made a beautiful curtain for it as well. Just one more way to make room (don't have to open and shut it) and add some pop and pizzazz.
And it's funny. Even though she wasn't born and we had no idea- her room does describe Little Miss. She's quirky and fun. She is bright and happy. But she's also classic, she's one of a kind. The room fits her perfectly.

Super Mom?
Ok- so from the moment I found out I was pregnant I've been nothing but excited and positive. Pregnancy was fun, labor was easy (as easy as labor can be) and parenting has been heaven. When people ask how it's going I'm always fast to smile and say "I love it". And I do. More than anything else in this world. I was put on this earth to be Kennedy's Mommy. But today was... interesting. Today I had a moment or two when I realized- it can be hard. I'm a little lost. And for the first time- I'm admitting it publicly.
Today we did a pretty cool activity to get to know some of our coworkers in other departments a little better. In order for the exercise to work we had to be open and honest. I wasn't sure how it was going to work but I was put with three great ladies- three moms- three working moms. Just by order I went last. After hearing these women, all of which were older than me, talk about their identity as a mother and a full time job holder, it completely changed my route of what I was going to say. I barely got two sentences out before I started to tear up talking about my daughter. I blame part on the hormones- Miss K turned the big 6-months-old today and part on listening to the women before me talk about balancing life and love. I just kind of lost it. I've held a lot of what I said in for the last four months- since I've been back to work full time.
Let me back up. My job is awesome. I hang out with college kids, get paid to go to sporting events and have some phenomenal co-workers. But my job is also just that- a job. It can be time consuming and the fall semester is flat out exhausting. I have after hour meetings and events once or twice a week. Tack on a Saturday football game and with basketball around the corner- my calendar is filling up faster than it did when I was a 21-year-old college student with a dazzling social life. I haven't been home much. I come home at least once a week and Kennedy is already in bed for the night. I find myself begging my husband or mom to text me pictures of her. I've had to rush to work a time or two because I can't put my baby down in the morning to get ready.
I cry. More than I've ever cried before. I know what you're thinking- "what- the tough, hard headed, opinionated girl is- gasp- weak?" Yup- I'm not a fan of it myself. I hate when people see me crack. I was raised by a strong woman and a standup coach- you didn't give up, you didn't let people see you sad and you most certainly didn't let people walk all over you. So the fact that I've cried more in the last three months than I have all the times I've watched Armageddon, Titanic and Fox and the Hound put together is pretty crazy.
So back to today. I found myself sitting in a room with people I've worked with for almost three years and am just now bonding with them over something as silly as- do I spend as much time with my kid as I should. I was kind of hanging on with just a tear or two until I saw these three women tear up listening to me. They made me stop mid sentence to hug me. I lost it. They didn't need to do that. They could have judged me silently or though "what a baby" but they didn't. They affirmed that my overwhelmingness was ok. They were awesome. That's all there is to it. They let me know that it's ok that I'm struggling with identifying myself between career woman and mom.
I just feel like I'm missing out on the most important time of my daughter's life. That's silly right? She isn't going to remember this time. She won't know that Daddy dressed her on Friday mornings or Nana Vicki picked her up one or two times a week. So why does it bother me? Why do I care so much? It's because I love my daughter with all my heart and then some.
I'm selfish. I work so hard and so much that when I have a rare free afternoon or weekend- I don't want to share my daughter. I want family time. I want snuggle time. I want Mommy time. I know it annoys some people. I know they don't understand my job and think I'm just overreacting. At first that bugged me and I got frustrated but now- honestly- I don't give a damn. These are the years, months, heck even these days-days that I won't get back. These are the days when she literally lights up when I walk into a room. The days where she fits just right in my lap when she sleeps. The days where Mommy can do no wrong- even if I make her cry because she has to take a bath she stops the second I wrap that big old towel around her. These are the days that make me a mom. I'm so lucky we have so many family and friends close. It's great that we can just jump in the car and see them. But I feel bad when I turn down a girl's night or afternoon outing. I shouldn't right? Girl's nights and birthday parties will always be there but Miss K won't be a baby forever.
I feel like I'm rambling. If you're still with me just hang on a bit longer. I think I have a point somewhere.
The point is life is hard. But in the words of one of my favorite baseball coaches- "It's supposed to be hard, the hard is what makes it great."And it's true. My life is harder than it was a year ago. But my life is also so much greater. I love my husband more now than I did then. I appreciate my days off more now than I did then. I respect my Mom more now than I did then.
I don't want to give up my job- that's not an option. It's the life I chose and I will stick with it. I wouldn't know what to do with myself if I didn't have my college "kiddos". So before you say "Well this chick just wants her wine bottle AND her glass full" just listen. We've all been there. The grass is always greener.
I'm not looking for pity or affirmation that I'm doing a good job juggling life and work. I know for the most part I am. I just needed to let the wall down a bit. I needed to admit out loud that being a parent and full time worker can be a bit draining.
Super Mom I am not but I'd like to think I'd get a blue ribbon for trying if they were handing them out.
